It's always thrilling after much forethought and months of work to see a new issue hit the newsstands. From ideas and concepts it gradually takes shape, first in digital format and then on paper, a tangible reality as it rolls off the printer's production line. Read, re-read, then passed along to others to read, it's an incredible feeling to know you're making a positive contribution and establishing a community of people who have a common bond, that of their love for dogs. It's therefore

When the baby you’ve had for years gets a sniff of the new baby you’re bringing home for the first time, it’s only natural for a tinge of jealousy to set in.

A former journalism school classmate of mine emailed me this photograph today because she knew I’d appreciate it.

“My husband wanted to take a few snaps, and there was such an expanse of flesh that Lily decided to take advantage of it,” Kanina told me over the phone lines from Petawawa, Ontario. It was a

Besides the obvious gratification that comes from rescue – helping animals – there is a side benefit to the work. The people.

The individuals I come across in this field are generous, kind, and downright inspiring. Once in a while I meet someone whose commitment and devotion to the animals is so powerful that it brings tears to my eyes.

Yesterday I stumbled upon the story of 23-year-old David Carl Lee, an animal rescuer who has surmounted enormous challenges to save

Hurray, it’s December 1st, only 24 more sleeps before Christmas is here. I love this month!! Although it means being besieged by rain, sleet and dark dog-walks, there is so much to look forward to. Strings of coloured lights decorating trees and homes, illuminate neighbourhoods, and break the dreariness of long winter nights making it fun to get out with poochie for evening dog-walks.  Have you noticed that people always seem to be friendlier, kinder and more thoughtful at this time of year

Working dogs are fascinating to watch. Most recently, I saw a bright-eyed Beagle work the room at Vancouver International Airport’s customs arrival area. The female agent and her sprightly canine partner barely broke eye contact with each other as they made their way down the row of bags. They communicated in their secret language, bonded by teamwork and a common goal.

I stationed myself beside another customs officer to find out more. He told me that this Beagle wasn’t a drug dog Read more...

I should have heeded my own advice: during peak holiday times you need to book your dog into your favourite kennel wayyyy in advance.  My dog's favourite place to hang out when I'm out of town is the Rex Dog Hotel (see earlier blog about the Rex). There's a reason all the good boarding facilities book up early, it's simply just that...  they're good.   In the case of the Rex I feel no guilt or concern leaving Kaya in their care as
