Throughout my posted musings, I have consistently reiterated the fact that I am a sucker for difficult dogs; this fact is glaringly evident in my experiences with our favourite finicky fur ball, Chance. My proclivity for tough cases has triggered a sort of kinship with others who refuse to take the easy road when it comes to taking chances on their canine companions. I can relate to their triumphs, and unfortunately, share in their grief in losing one of these dogs who, in the end, wound up

I honestly feel that for the first time, I celebrated the ushering in of a New Year the way the holiday gods intended - by laying in bed all day in my pajamas watching Buffy with my dogs. This was the most unproductive, indolent and satisfying January 1st in the history of all my 25(ish) years!

Jeremy was unexpectedly called in to work, so I was presented with every coupled gal's wildest fantasy - having the house to myself. The only task looming before me that day was a daunting

One of the many perks of working here at Modern Dog is that I have access to a wealth of exceptional and fabulous dog products that I otherwise may not have known about. As a Cash/Roxy/Chance enthusiast, I am always on the lookout for unique ways to spoil them and pay tribute to the joy that they bring to my life.

My first selection was to have a portrait commissioned of each of them so that I could proudly display my gaggle of ruffians throughout my home. I decided to go with an

As many of you might have surmised by now, writing, along with dogs, hockey and beer, is one of my all-time favourite pursuits. So imagine my delight when the editor of Modern Dog asked me to write an article chronicling the story of how Chance and I came to find each other for the Winter 2010/11 issue (now on newsstands!) I was ecstatic, albeit baffled as to why this great honour was bestowed upon me, but rather than ask questions I began the daunting task of reflecting upon the six-month

Although my Christmas letter to Santa is short and simple (PJs, Buffy DVDs, gin) my list of budget-friendly holiday finds is much more exciting. Here are my top picks for dog-related gifts this holiday season and their lucky recipients:

• My dogs - a deluxe hanging feeder from These Creatures. These wall-mounted

This weekend I had the great honour of witnessing the blissful union of two close friends in a stunning, much anticipated, out-of-town wedding ceremony (congrats Nate & Kaylan!) This would be our first night away from home since having Chance join our pack, and we found ourselves faced with the frustrating dilemma of who would be willing to care for him while we were away. We've never had a problem finding someone to watch Roxy and Cash being that they are both independent and very well

While searching endlessly for the dog world's greatest finds, our editor often stumbles upon something so wonderful that I simply must share it. The "Pets on Furniture" post on the Desire to Inspire blog is one such example. It seems like such an ordinary concept, but somehow these endearing and occasionally stoic photos of pets lounging on furniture have an extraordinary effect on their Read more...

Awkward.JPG

We've all seen them, and unfortunately, most of us have participated in them. Those unnatural, forced, inappropriate family snap shots that capture the worst of you and your pets in a permanent documentation of your discontent. Family photos featuring you and your dogs at your most awkward seem to be all the rage nowadays, thanks to the follow up to the New York Times best seller Awkward Family Photos. This website (and soon

Although I am a huge supporter of rescue and the proud guardian of three adopted and/or fostered dogs, I have to admit that when I brought each one of my buddies home, I had ulterior motives - I wanted these dogs because I love how happy they make me. This doesn't mean that I don't care about their well being, it just means that for me, adoption was not a selfless act. I'm not sure where this self-centered complex stems from. Perhaps it's a variation on the "eldest child" syndrome, or maybe

For those of you not currently residing in the true north strong and free, you might not have realized that this past weekend was Thanksgiving for us Canucks. My day off was spent lazing around in flannel pajamas and fluffy slippers surrounded by my best fuzzy buddies. Special occasions provide me with the perfect excuse to spoil my favorite dogs even more than I usually do with healthy treats (carrots and plain turkey meat are a Lima house favorite), extra long walks and cozy naps in the
