When my dog Kaya was a young dog she had a bountiful supply of energy and it was next to impossible to wear her out. As a scent hound (Pointer X), she was always busily sniffing out something she’d want to chase after and had an uncanny knack of finding brilliant ways of escaping our backyard. And if not busily planning her next break, she’d be into some other form of mischief.  To keep that surplus energy in check she needed to be well exercised several times a day, but our

I've always wanted to travel to the Maritimes in Eastern Canada; however, when choosing vacation destinations, warmer climes, like the South of France, usually win out; this summer, though, my Maritime travel dreams were fulfilled.  After attending a family wedding near Ottawa, I made my way east to Prince Edward Island (PEI is Canada's smallest province, birth place of

Over my years publishing Modern Dog, I’ve had an opportunity to speak to many, many dog lovers, and had the privilege to get a glimpse into their lives because of our shared love of dogs. Time and again, I hear incredibly heart-touching tales of lives changed (and even saved) by people bringing a dog into the family.

I, for one, can testify to this, my life was turned upside down when Kaya, a rambunctious, overly-energetic and neurotic Pointer cross came into my life. To begin with

I try to always have my camera on hand as you never know when there will be a “paw-some” opportunity to capture a unique photograph. For instance, I was rushing to an appointment one sunny Friday afternoon when I passed by a local patio. I wistfully glanced at the patrons who were enjoying a bite to eat whilst relaxing in the sun. Unfortunately for me, relaxation was not on my agenda that afternoon, but before I walked past I noticed a young couple whom definitely knew how to maximize their

With the spotlight on environmental consciousness, it's always interesting to see how inventive people have become recycling old and unusable articles into something new and serviceable. I was recently at my local Simply Computing store when Pinyi (one of the sales reps there) told me about the "high-tech" dog bed he made for his pooch from an old MAC computer.  Here's his Miniature Poodle, Muimui  (means "little sister" in Cantonese) snuggled into her very special bed.

I just logged onto the new Petzooba e-card site and had a blast viewing the different e-cards that you can personalize with a message (and even a photo) before sending them off to your friends/family. The site was created by my friend Mitch Wilder, an animal lover and pet industry expert whose wit and humour make the cards on this site special indeed! There's a plethora of cards for just about any occasion you can think of - from birthdays, holidays, graduations, and other special

I'd like to introduce you to Modern Dog's newest blogger, Steve Duno. I came to know Steve as a result of his publicist sending me a review copy of his latest book, Last Dog On The Hill: The Extraordinary Life of Lou. We get lots (and lots) of books sent to us for review consideration and it's often difficult to chose which ones will be covered in Modern Dog, but Last Dog On The Hill, grabbed my attention from the get-go. I too, fell in love with the remarkable Lou,

It's wonderful to have this summer-time stat holiday that gives most a long weekend to relax, spend some time with friends/family or to even get to some of those chores we never seem to have enough time to get done. I hope, though, that you'll be able to take in some of the festivities this holiday commemorates and to also reflect and give thanks for the amazing opportunities and freedoms we're provided in these great countries we live in (and so often take for granted!).  So get out and
