Well our new kitten, Blackie Chan, came home this weekend, and boy was I unprepared for what life with a baby cat would be like! I expected this little ball of fur to want to snuggle and snooze all day long, but I was so, so wrong. In fact, it takes a lot of wrestling, stalking, chasing, climbing, hiding and hissing to tire him out enough to warrant a nap. But man, when he does nap he is so darn cute!

Being that Roxy is blind, Blackie Chan doesn’t factor much into her daily life, save for when he silently follows her down the hallway and batts at her little piggy tail. No, Blackie Chan’s main focus in the house is Cash, his super cool big brother. We were worried at first because Cash has never seen a cat up close andย once killed a rodent when my screams deemed it unwelcome in our home. To err on the side of caution, we left B.C. in his soft carrier for half an hour to let Cash get used to his smell. Once Cash seemed at ease with him, we let Blackie Chan out to explore the house, and explore he did! He squeezed himself into nooks and crannies we forgot the house had, as was evidenced by the cobwebs stuck to his fur upon his exit from said corners.

I spent most of the weekend slowly introducing Cash to Blackie Chan and monitoring their interactions. There have been a few times that Cash seemed a little too interested in B.C.’s crazy kitty antics, and will set toย chase him and give him a bit of a smack with his paw if he gets too out of control. But overallย it’s been pretty smooth, all things considered.

It has become abundantly clear that Blackie Chan is smitten with Cash, and that at this time, Cash does not echo this sentiment. If his big bro is fast asleep, B.C. will sneak up beside him to snuggle in, but if Cash notices him he’ll promptly roll over in an attempt to crush his pesky new shadow.

For now we’ll continue to watch these two closely as they figure out how they both fit into the new hierarchy. I’m hoping Cash will begin to see Blackie Chan as a friend and companion, as opposed to an intruder in his home that deserves to be eaten.
