The emptiness is all-enveloping. The silence is deafening. The hole in my heart is deep… Life without dog. Dog is happiness. Dog is company. Dog is joy. Dog is companionship, unquestioning, unwavering, and always framed by unconditional love. When you’ve experienced Dog, and you suddenly find yourself alone, a heavy sorrow descends upon your soul. I’ve shared my life with dogs for nearly 20 years. And now, I feel as if I’m floating on a life raft in the middle of the ocean without a life vest since Diesel crossed the Rainbow Bridge. We had to play God that day. We had to decide whether he should live or die. Time was running out…he was bleeding internally…he was dying. We had to weigh all the facts, all the possibilities. And we had to do it quickly. The vet later said “you made the right decision”. Did we? She knew the extent of Diesel’s internal bleeding and the size of the mass that ruptured. I will be forever haunted by our decision to let him go. He is deeply missed
