Meet Luka
We adopted Luka from the BC SPCA Squamish branch three weeks ago. While Tim and I both grew up in families who had dogs, this is the first dog we are responsible for. We don't know much about Luka's background, other than that he was rescued in an area north of Squamish and spent a couple of weeks in a foster family before we adopted him. His picture on the SPCA website made my heart jump. Tim and I met Luka two days later and instantly liked him in person too - he seemed smart, cuddly and energetic. We thought through the responsibilities and commitments of adopting a puppy for another four days and met him a second time before deciding to go ahead. His high energy was overwhelming within the first week - even for a marathoner and a triathlete - and he tested our authority from day 1. While advice from friend and family helped, we felt we needed more advice and had three one-on-one sessions with a local dog trainer in the first two weeks to stem our concerns we couldn't cope with our puppy. Her advice truly helped, and week three was a completely different story. Sure he tests our limits on a daily basis but that's OK - we now have the tools to guide him and ourselves. We couldn't be happier with him in our lives - even though it had a much larger impact than we had anticipated.
