Welcome! If youโ€™ve arrived at this page as a result of reading my editorial about affirmations in the Winter 08 issue of Modern Dog, you have just given yourself an example of deliberate intent, the premise behind affirmationsโ€”you chose to do something and then made it happen.

Getting up and going to work every day is an example of deliberate intent. Something as simple as choosing to be clean by having a daily shower is yet another example of deliberate intent. Deliberate intent causes you to take action. Using this logic, you can train your mind to accept a yet-to-manifest outcome as being true, at which point your subconscious mind will begin to accept your positive statement as reality and start transforming your attitude, behaviour, and actions to align with your affirmation. Over time, you will see results.

The secret is to make your affirmations in the present tense. If itโ€™s money you seek, you would affirm the present-tense โ€œI am incredibly wealthyโ€ rather than the future-tense statement โ€œI will be wealthy.โ€ Also, for the subconscious mind to begin accepting your affirmation as truth, you must repeat it many, many times over. And you must also have faith that you will realize your goal. This perhaps is the most difficult part as many will give up or not be open to accepting opportunities that might lead them to their goal. Have faith.

It was seven years ago that I got started with affirmations. As a neophyte publisher, I felt totally overwhelmed, wondering just what I had gotten myself into. In my heart of hearts I knew I was on the right track, but there was so much I didnโ€™t know and there never seemed to be enough time in the day to accomplish what needed to get done. Iโ€™d wake up in the middle of the night feeling anxious, heart pounding. Thatโ€™s when I started to recite a Success affirmation Iโ€™d read in a book called You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay. Hay House, Inc. 2008ย has kindly permitted me to reprint it for you here:

Success Affirmation
In the infinity of life where I am,
All is perfect, whole, and complete.
I am one with the Power that created me.
I have within me all the ingredients for success.
I now allow the success formula to flow through me
And manifest in my world.
Whatever I am guided to do will be a success.
I learn from every experience.
I go from success to success and from glory to glory.
My pathway is a series of stepping stones
To ever greater successes.
All is well in my world.

As mentioned in my winter-issue editorial, I would recite this affirmation whenever I awoke feeling anxious as well as many times throughout the day. I also put it to song and would sing it to myself while out walking my Kaya. Countless times throughout the years Iโ€™ve repeated this affirmation and to this day I still recite it. Now, seven years later, Modern Dog is firmly established throughout North America and is even on newsstands overseas, with subscribers around the world. Although my success didnโ€™t just magically happen (it took a lot of hard work), I never faltered for a moment because I knew I was on the right path and would be successful. My affirmations helped me maintain my focus and conviction and helped me create the reality I envisioned.

So how do you go about creating an affirmation? To begin with Iโ€™d suggest reading You Can Heal Your Life, the Louise Hayโ€™s book from which my Success affirmation comes. Iโ€™ve also listed below some other books you might find helpful. Or, if you want to get started this minute, think of something youโ€™d like to see happen in your life. Create a positive statement about it in the present tense that describes your desired outcome. For instance, I, personally would like to give myself more time to exercise and play. Hereโ€™s an affirmation I created to help achieve more balance in my life:

โ€œMy life is in balance, I give myself time to exercise, work, play, and relax.โ€

A theme for many of us involves money (i.e., having more/enough of it). Oftentimes our beliefs about money cause us to never realize financial abundance. Iโ€™m sure most of us have heard โ€œmoney is the root of all evil; money isnโ€™t everything; money doesnโ€™t grow on trees; if I get rich Iโ€™ll lose my current friendsโ€ฆโ€ so creating a successful affirmation will oftentimes require first looking inward to understand just how you think about money (or relationships, body imageโ€ฆ ). You can thereby create an affirmation to assist you in releasing those limiting beliefs and start welcoming abundance (or health, balance, happiness.. ) into your life.
