Saving Senior Dogs: Muttville Senior Dog Rescue to the rescue!

In many animal shelters across North America, dogs over seven years old are deemed “unadoptable”.  Continually passed over for puppies and their younger counterparts, senior dogs spend significantly more time waiting for their furever homes in loud, cold shelter kennels or worse – are euthanized there with the assumption that there isn’t much chance of their being chosen for adoption.

In 2007, long-time animal advocate and shelter volunteer Sherri Franklin decided to do something about this heartbreaking reality she witnessed firsthand – and Muttville Senior Dog Rescue was born!  It took no time for things to change for the dogs once they arrived at Muttville; some had been in regular shelters for months without so much as an adoption application, and within hours at Muttville were ready to go home to join their new families!

The very same year it was founded, Muttvile rescued 27 senior dogs from shelters. The next year that number blossomed to 122 dogs and by its third year in operation, Muttville’s rescue count leapt to 235. A decade later, Mutville celebrated its 5,000th senior dog rescue. Muttville currently rescues almost 27 a week – that’s 1,100 happy senior dogs per year given another chance at life.

According to the ASPCA, each year more than 3.9 million dogs are surrendered to local shelters around the United States. Out of which more than 1.2 million dogs are euthanized annually. A large number of these are senior dogs.

A large part of Modern Dog’s mission is to support the efforts of organizations that work tirelessly to assist abused, neglected or homeless dogs. Our donation programs, charitable events and cash gifts allow us to give back to the dog community. Your subscription helps us support these programs. In honour of National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day on April 30, we’re donating $5 from each subscription sold to Muttville Senior Dog Rescue.
