Yesterday, at the office, my dog Kaya started barking to alert me that she wanted some help getting up from her bed (at 15 years old she's losing strength in her back legs and often can't get up on her own). I helped lift her up as I usually do, but her front legs went all wobbly and wouldn't support her and then her back legs gave out on her too. She was disoriented and panting but at the same time wasn't content to lie down. With the help of my colleagues, we moved her around the

From time to time we hear about heroic animals... those who know that something is wrong, then risk their own lives to save others. Today I'd like to shine the spotlight on a 14 year-old Bernese mountain dog cross, named Kenai, who will receive the American Humane Association's Golden Paw Award today for his heroic efforts. This past Sunday he saved nine people and four other dogs from carbon monoxide poisoning by waking up one of

I think it's a safe bet to say that most Modern Dog readers love and spoil their dogs and treat them as family members, so it's hard for us to understand how people can be intentionally cruel to animals. Take for instance those who pit dogs against each other in the name of "sport". As we all know from the horrific facts revealed in the Michael Vick case, the dogs that end up in the fighting ring have been horribly abused both mentally and physically in order to train them to fight to the

My dog has been blessed with good health which over the years has thankfully kept vet visits to mostly annual checkups and vaccinations. Of course, there have been a few rush trips in to get her checked out after she'd scarffed back something disgusting on a walk that I couldn't pull her away from on time. The resulting inflamed digestive track would always be quickly remedied with a treatment of antibiotics. As Kaya ages (she must be in her late 90's in people years), I've been bringing

I can't deny it; my dog is well into her golden years and approaching the end of her time with me. I try not to feel too sad about it, but rather focus on all the good times we've had together (and still have). There are, however, some definite negatives to the physical side of getting older, such as stiff, arthritic joints making such simple things as climbing stairs or standing up difficult and sometimes downright impossible. I've watched my dog's downward spiral in this regard. As

In the last couple months I've become somewhat of an expert on the subject of "poo". Dog-poo that is. Yuck! Although it's not exactly a subject I'd like to stake my claim to fame on, I have, in the last while, become educated on what works and what doesn't, both in keeping my dog fresh and sweet smelling and doing the same for my house (and office), too. Now, nearly 15 years old, my pooch Kaya is intermittently incontinent, her problem arising from arthritis and nerve degeneration in her

I was away at Global Pet Expo in Florida this past weekend and whilst away, my fur-kid Kaya was lodging at her home away from home, The Rex Dog Hotel (think high-end hotel for dogs). Although she gets first-class care and attention there, I still felt kinda guilty leaving her behind as she's getting on in years and she'd miss Valentine's Day with me (and the abundance of treats I'd have spoiled her with). To make it up to her, I'm going to whip up a batch of special home-baked dog treats.

The much-anticipated Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show will soon be upon us (February 9th and 10th) and if you're planning a trip to New York to take in this event, you've got to check out the Hotel Penn. It's conveniently located directly across from Madison Square Garden and is therefore the hotel of choice for those involved with the show. Apart from actually walking through the benching area at the Westminster show itself, you won't see more dogs... dogs in crates, dogs on leash,

Having just received a press release, I thought I'd pass along this information about the upcoming Yukon Quest sled dog races that begin February 14th, 2009 in Whitehorse Yukon, finishing in Fairbanks, Alaska. Each year they alternate the start/finish between these two cities. This grueling race has been run every year since 1984 and follows a course along the Yukon River "the old highway of the north".  Mushers and their dog teams cover a thousand miles of remote backcountry at
