As a kick-off for the launch of the 7th annual Woofstock summer of love celebration (a 2-day event held every June in Toronto, Canada), what could be more fitting than "mutterings" of Bow Vows. Yep, you heard right, in conjunction with this year's Woofstock, a first-ever Woofstock Doggie Weddings High Tea is planned in honour of love-struck pooches who will celebrate their "commuttment" to canine love and companionship.

Have a fun and safe long weekend everyone and remember to give recognition and thanks to those in the military service who have died or were injured in the course of their duties to protect our freedom.

Also not to be forgotten are the war dogs that have also played their part in the military like the tiny Yorkshire Terrier named Smoky who was found bedraggled and starving in a foxhole in the New Guinea jungle. No one knows her origin, but she was highly intelligent and was taught

Do you know that the WSPA reaches out to communities throughout the world to improve the welfare of animals and end cruelty towards them? Their

We've all heard of guardian spirits and perhaps you've even wondered if you have one yourself (or perhaps you know you do!). If you're interested in learning more about them you might enjoy reading Animal Spirit Guides: Discover Your Power Animal and the Shamanic Path - by Chris Luttichau. In essence, an animal spirit guide or power animal is a guardian spirit and in this book Luttichau tells us that all animals, from the wolf to the ant carry a message of guidance and hope. He

On a recent dog-walk down around the ponds at Jericho Beach I happened upon this notice regarding our plummeting bee populations. With over one-third of our crops requiring the help of bees for pollination, it's vital that we be mindful of ways we can help support the colonization of bees. Why not bee-helpful and plant flowering trees and shrubs that attract bees or build a bee home like this sign suggests. For more information visit

While Kaya and I were out on our usual morning stroll along the Kits Beach sea walk, we caught up with these canine cuties relaxing on a comfortable perch, enjoying the morning air while watching the world go by.

It's been well documented that children trained to love and be kind to animals grow into kind and compassionate adults.  It's therefore heartening to see organizations such as the American Humane Society recognize children who go "above and beyond" by dedicating their free time volunteering or organizing events that help animals. In conjunction with this year's Be Kind to Animals Week (observed May 3-9 this year), the American Humane Society awarded two kind kids, Annie Lee
