Each year the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) holds its annual Genesis Awards so that it can shine a spotlight on those in the news and entertainment media whose works and actions have increased public awareness of animal protection issues. It is with great pleasure that I can say that Modern Dog is a proud sponsor of this important event. March 19th, 2011, marks the 25th Anniversary of the Genesis Awards and the  gala ceremony will be held at the Hyatt

With 77% of Modern Dog readers taking their dogs with them when they travel and 76% telling us that having a dog affects their vehicle purchasing decisions, I thought I'd share my experience test-driving a 2011 Honda Pilot through some of the toughest winter road conditions I'd yet to experience. My recent road-trip to BC's interior took me through some extremely diverse driving conditions, starting with west coast torrential rains on crowded, high-speed freeways then twisting high-

Being an aficionado of the Wirehaired Dachshund, I was of course hoping to see my favourite breed win Best in Show. Alas, it was not to be, though the coveted title did go to a wiry-haired compatriot (albeit on the other end of the size scale),  a magnificent Scottish Deerhound named Foxcliffe Hickory Wind. The contenders were narrowed down over a two day period. Firstly, the dogs compete against other dogs of the same breed. The Best in Breed then go on to compete

It's always fun to spend time in New York City, but if you're a dog lover, the experience reaches levels of the sublime when combined with the excitement of Westminster Kennel Club's annual dog show. Now in its 135th year, the event is held each February at Madison Square Garden. This year it drew over 2500 competing dogs and the preparation for and excitement around the event is nearly palpable. Even the Empire State Building commemorates the event by dressing itself in the WKC's

I recently received an email from John in Kansas City that made me smile. In it were a series of photographs showing church signs debating the issue of whether or not dogs go to heaven (apparently the churches are facing each other on opposite sides of the street). I'm not sure whether or not the signs are actually real or have been photoshopped, but nevertheless they're entertaining.

Enjoy!

Modern Dog's Cutest Couple Contest, in my opinion, is the most fun contest we've run to date. It's heartwarming to see photos of so many people whose dogs obviously play a very important role in their lives (it's these like-minded people who inspired me to create Modern Dog in the first place!). Check them out by clicking here.

Once a photo gets

Over the Holidays I had the pleasure of escaping my wet, gray, west coast winter for a brief getaway in sunny Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.  I left Penny, my recently adopted Wirehaired Dachshund in the loving care of my daughter. Although I was gone for just one week and kept busy with the usual things tourists do on vacation, my thoughts constantly drifted back to my dog and I soon found myself counting down the days until I would see her again. Clearly this little bundle of fur has stolen my
