I’ve been considering where I’d like to go for a winter vacation. Although my typical winter get-away gear would normally consist of bathing suit, snorkeling equipment, tank tops and shorts, I think I might trade it all in this year for snow suit, gloves, toque and long underwear. I’m not joking! I was reading an article on dog-sledding vacations and it got me thinking… northern lights, an expense of unbroken glistening snow and the solitude of winter wilderness sounded awesome… it’s an adventure I’d like to have at least once in my lifetime. Also, when my mother was a young woman she lived up north in Whitehorse for a number of years and as a result, I grew up hearing many a bewitching story of the North Country. The haunting verses about the north from the Robert Service poem The Cremation of Sam Magee still mesmerize me… "There are strange things done ‘neath the midnight sun. By the men who moil for gold. The arctic trails have their secret tales…". I’ll keep you posted on my decision.
