I just received the nicest surprise in the mail the other day! Fellow dog lover and silver smith Deanne Pace sent me this beautiful "Peace, Love, Dog" sterling silver charm necklace and I absolutely love it! While I'm not usually a jewelry-wearer, this delicate, handcrafted necklace perfectly describes my philosophy on life (well, maybe not the "Peace" part, but I'm working on that). Thanks Deanne!

Each year my friends and I embark on a weekend camping excursion into the wilds to enjoy the laid back and carefree lifestyle associated with sleeping outdoors. Within this group of unsavory characters are other dog enthusiasts who, like me, insist upon imposing their four legged children onto our other, less dog-devoted pals. This makes for a tantalizing mix of dogs barking, humans scolding, and general pandemonium. To try and avoid some of these stressful pitfalls, I've formulated

Chance - "Little Jerry Seinfeld", Kramer's intimidating and peck-happy rooster that got caught up in an illegal underground cockfighting ring. "I like the way he handles himself".

Roxy - "Elaine". Petite and pretty, but can be quite terrifying if she wants to. "Somebody's coming back in a body bag!"

Cash - "Tony the Mimbo", Elaine's "man bimbo" boyfriend. He wasn't especially bright but was ruggedly handsome and super cool. "Step off, George, step off".

I can think back to a time when, as a teen, I watched a mother cut up a hot dog for her 13 year old daughter and thought to myself, "lord woman, let the poor girl be and stop babying her!" I couldn't help but stare incredulously at this woman who was so clearly stunting her daughter's inevitable transition from dependent child into adulthood. This sort of behaviour was clearly for the mother's sake, and not for the benefit of the child. Oh, how my critical assumptions have come back to bite

Being that Cash is a rescue, we don't have his exact date of birth; however we always celebrate his birthday during the first week of July since this is his estimated time of arrival. In honour of my baby boy's 8th year, we decided to commemorate him with a gift that perfectly emulates his most distinct characteristics - an overly large, colourful and joyful portrait from Vancouver artist Shannon Thiesen that now hangs Read more...

Now that the Summer issue is on newsstands, I can finally reveal the secret investigative reporting that Cash and I did for Modern Dog. Freestyle dog dancing! Yup, you read that right, Cash and I joined a competitive choreographed dog dance class and GOD were we terrible. I don't know which part was worse, Cash barking and lunging uncontrollably at the other dogs, me on my hands and knees trying to get his attention, or him peeing on the gymnasium wall. Suffice it to say, this is not

Believe it or not folks, my dogs are not always well behaved. In fact, we often shy away from attending on-leash festivities with Cash as a result of his over exuberant personality and the general public's misguided reactions to his appearance (my feelings get hurt very easily when it comes to discrimination against my dogs).

However, this past Sunday we decided to throw caution to the wind and attend the

Great news! Chance's surgery to remove the aural hematoma was a great success, and while they had him under, they did us a huge favour and neutered him! We've always suspected that part of his putziness derived from having too much, ahem, "manliness" without being able to use it. However, the vet has been hesitant up until now to put him under anesthesia because of his age and our lack of knowledge surrounding his past health history. But I guess they figured they might as well kill two

The poor guy just can't catch a break! Forgive my exasperated outburst, but I'm feeling a wee bit frustrated with the run of bad luck that seems to be relentlessly following Chance. Yesterday I noticed he was more itchy than usual and decided to give him a bath to soothe his skin. It was during his bath that I noticed one of his ear flaps was incredibly swollen; I mean Reebok Air Pump shoes swollen! Of course my immediate reaction was to call Carol at SAINTS who informed me that this was

We're baaack!

That's right, this post marks the launch of my new blog, Bark On. This chronicle will celebrate everything good within the dog world including, but not limited to, my three dogs (intros to follow), dog paraphernalia, news, trends, and essentially anything canine-related.

For you newcomers, we ended my last blog by reminiscing over the past year since my family began fostering Chance, a paraplegic Pekingese with a serious personality disorder. You can relive
