As a sewing novice, I'm always looking for ways to cut corners and avoid having to stitch any DIY project. Back when we were fostering Chance, an incontinent paraplegic Pekingese, I was having to wash the dogs' bedding every day because of his accidents, so I would make him really simple, no-sew beds that required little time, skill and money! Although they aren't the prettiest pet beds, Chance always loved his, and now that Blackie Chan has made himself right at home I decided it was time

You may have noticed that there has been a lot of hubub about Roxy in the blog over the past few weeks. This, of course, was due to her impending 10th birthday which we've since celebrated. One of the things I did to commemorate our time together was to compose a top 10 list of my favourite Roxy things, something that came quickly and easily to mind and that served as a reminder of why my first dog is the best dog ever. But this admission got me thinking that there's another cherished hound

In every issue of Modern Dog you'll find a DIY recipe to make your own delectable eats for your dog(s). In the upcoming Winter edition, we included the Grain-Free Goodbites from MyDogsBreakfast (one of my favourite dog blogs). Being that Cash is now on a low-carb diet, I've cut out any treats that aren't grain-free and good for him, so this simple recipe seemed like a perfect fit. Now I changed it up a bit to include some of my dogs

Whenever the weekend rolls around, the thing I look forward to most is our Sunday adventures. The dogs, Jer and I bundle up, pack ourselves into the car and go looking for new trails, parks, and beaches to explore! One of our new favourites is the Douglas trail that runs along the Fraser River, only 15 minutes from our house! Although it's too cold for swimming right now, we love running in and out of the bushes, hiding from Jer and searching for treasures!

I've been delaying this post for over a week now because I'm not sure how to write it, so here it goes - Cash has cancer.

On Nov 2nd Cash woke up with a cough and a fever. No matter how many blankets we wrapped him in, he continued to shiver for no apparent reason. His breathing seemed wheezy and he had no interest in food whatsoever. We brough him in to the vet the next morning expecting to hear that a skin or ear infection was the cause of all this trouble, however the vet

Well our new kitten, Blackie Chan, came home this weekend, and boy was I unprepared for what life with a baby cat would be like! I expected this little ball of fur to want to snuggle and snooze all day long, but I was so, so wrong. In fact, it takes a lot of wrestling, stalking, chasing, climbing, hiding and hissing to tire him out enough to warrant a nap. But man, when he does nap he is so darn cute!

Being that Roxy is blind, Blackie Chan doesn't factor much into her daily life,

The day finally came, on Saturday, October 27th my best friend, soul mate and precious dog Roxy turned 10. I can't believe that it has been 10 years since I first saw her in the dirty window of a pet store! I've done several things to lead up to this momentous celebration, including having custom hand-carved collars made and getting a portrait of Roxy tattooed on my arm. So when her actual birthday finally came this past weekend, it was all things Roxy fun!

First I made Roxy a

As a first time cat owner and life-long dog lover, I was at a loss as to what I needed to create a happy feline household for our new kitten, Blackie Chan (B.C.). So I turned to my colleague and Modern Cat expert, Mary, who shares her home with two particularly saucy cats, BB and Sailo, to impart some kitty-cat wisdom on me. Thanks to Mary's guidance and a lot of flipping through the pages of Modern Cat magazine, I've compiled a Kitten Essentials kit to prepare me for Blackie Chan's

As promised, here is my totally awesome Roxy tattoo! She absolutely loves it, and is considering getting my name tattooed on her lower back to reciprocate the love. :)

As of right now, I have not told my mother about this tattoo (so hopefully she won't see this post). This isn't my first tattoo, in fact it's my 7th, however the fact that it's so large and placed so prominently on my arm will undoubtedly give my mom a heart attack. So, sorry mom, blame Roxy for being way too super

As the countdown to Roxy's 10th birthday nears its end (only one week away!) I wanted to take a few minutes to reflect on the things that make Roxy special. There are far too many qualities that endear this perfect creature to me to list them all, but I'll quickly run through the top highlights for you.

1. Her affinity for tennis balls. I wish I loved anything as much as Roxy loves tennis balls (well, I think I love her and Cash that much!)

2. Her brindle stripes.

Dog of the Week!
