What Your Dog’s Coat Says About Their Health

Your dogโ€™s coat tells a story. Dull or shiny, dry or oily, hair loss or itchingโ€”all paint a picture of how healthy your dog is. Nutritional status, disease state, and allergies are all reflected in the quality of your dogโ€™s skin and coat. Look for the following clues that something is off.

#1. Skin conditions/Smell

Skin irritation or infections, such as those caused by allergies, wounds or scrapes, parasites, or a yeast infection can all cause an unpleasant odour. Allergies, fungus, hormonal imbalances, parasites, and inflammation can all lead to an overgrowth of yeast or bacteria on the skin and cause a less-than-pleasant smell. Excessive scratching and licking due to discomfort can cause a secondary bacterial infection.

Call your vet if you notice any redness, swelling, oozing, or bleeding from the skin, or if your dog is excessively licking or biting a particular area. Remember that skin conditions become more difficult to treat the longer you wait.

#2. Dull Coat

A lacklustre coat is often a sign of poor nutrition. If your dog has a dull coat, look at their diet. Important nutrients may be missing. To get a sense of the quality of the food, you need to look at the list of ingredients. A high-quality dog food will have meat listed within the first three ingredients, say veterinary nutritionists Elizabeth Pask and Laura Scott. However, they caution, since ingredients are listed in order based on weight, having fresh chicken as your #1 ingredient does not necessarily mean that the product contains a lot of chicken, as fresh chicken contains a lot of water, which bumps up the weight of that ingredient. On the other hand, if chicken meal is the first ingredient listed, you know that there is far more chicken in the food, because meal is light in weight. Pro tip: supplement with an Omega-3-rich fish oil.

#3. Excessive Shedding

Certain breeds, like Huskies, blow their coat seasonally. If your dog is shedding excessively outside their normal, it could be the result of stress, poor nutrition, allergies, or a medical problem. Symptoms of Cushingโ€™s disease, for example, include hair loss, thin or fragile skin, and recurrent skin infections. Thyroid disorders can also cause itchiness and hair loss.

#4. Matted Fur

Mats can occur when your dog is rubbing or scratching at their fur, often due to allergies or another irritation. Make sure to brush or cut out mats as they can cause skin issues as the fur mats increasingly closer to the skin as time passes.

#5. Bald Spots

Bald spots in your dogโ€™s fur can be due to an allergic reaction to food or pollen. If you notice your dog licking or biting at the area of concern, parasites, such as fleas or mites, may be the culprit.

#6. Oily coat or seborrhea

Any dog can develop oily or greasy coats or skin, though itโ€™s important to remember that some breeds have naturally oilier coats. If your dogโ€™s coat is oilier than their normal, seborrhea, which causes excessive oil and/or dandruff may be the cause. Conditions that can cause seborrhea include allergies, hormonal disorders, natural oiliness, parasites, or primary seborrhea. Commit to regular bathingโ€”look for a shampoo with ingredients like natural citrus or baking soda. Regular grooming encourages good circulation and distributes the natural, beneficial oils that keep your dogโ€™s coat healthy.

If your dog has skin or coat issues, a visit to the vet can help determine and address underlying causes.

Benefits of Goat Milk

Despite North America’s bias toward cow’s milk, one of the most widely consumed milks in the world is from goats. Though still not commonly consumed in the western world, goat milk is slowly gaining in popularity as people recognize its host of nutritional benefits for people and pets. In addition to adding much needed moisture to a kibble diet, it’s rich in omegas and medium chain triglycerides, providing fatty acids for healthy skin and coat. It’s also packed with protein and amino acids with high levels of digestible taurine. Plus, goat milk has much smaller fat globules than cow milk and is lower in lactose, making it easier to digest.

In its raw form, goat milk is full of intact naturally occurring beneficial bacteria, enzymes, antioxidants, electrolytes, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals to benefit the health of your dog. It has natural anti-inflammatory properties and the probiotics can improve digestion and help fight the yeast that can grow in and around your dog’s ears and paws!

Want to give it a try? Primal Pet Foods makes a raw goat milk especially for dogs, enriched with superfood supplements like turmeric (anti-inflammatory properties), cinnamon (antioxidants), and ginger (anti-nausea). primalpetfoods.com

The Dog Bowl That Fights Germs

(spoiler…you'll be surprised!)

4)…Our pooch's food and water bowls!

Would you have guessed?

We all love our pets and wash their bowls thoroughly every day… right? But did you know that this is not enough to kill the germs – as microbes, such as bacteria, mould and fungi continue to multiply even after a thorough wash. Interestingly, we learned that 67% of bowls coming out of the dishwasher still have Salmonella bacteria present on their surfaces.*

WHAT THE SCIENTISTS SAY – AND WHY CLEANING OUR PET’S BOWLS EVEN EVERY DAY DOES NOT KILL GERMS

What does this mean and what can we do about it? A team of very patient microbiologists explained to us that the effects of cleaning are short lived, and once they have worn off, our dog bowls are subject to recontamination, leaving bacteria to thrive unchecked until the next clean.

So, sort of like the antibacterial hand sanitizers or surface sprays we all love to use constantly. If a surface isn’t continuously resistant to bacteria, the germs continue to thrive and multiply. The fat found in pet food for example is breeding-ground heaven for bacteria! We often get told by our readers that they have to keep cleaning the face area of their dogs after they have eaten or been drinking out their regular water and food bowls because of the bacteria build up which can lead to skin irritations and even dog acne.

WITH 25 YEARS GUARANTEED ANTIMICROBIAL PERFORMANCE THE HERO BOWL IS THE ONLY DOG BOWL YOU WILL EVER NEED

Armed with this new knowledge, our friends at HOWND decided to innovate the world’s most hygienic food and water bowl: The HERO Bowl. In an increasingly hygiene conscious world, the patent-pending HERO Bowl is a must have for pet owners that care as much about their pets’ hygiene as their own. It has built-in antimicrobial protection provided by BioCote®, a world leader in antimicrobial technology.

THE TECH BIT

The technology is present throughout the HERO Bowl, providing protection even if it becomes scratched or is chewed by the family dog. The antimicrobial protection will last for the lifetime of the bowl as it cannot not wash off or wear away.

A superior alternative to stainless steel, glass or ceramic products, the HERO Bowl is made from recyclable polypropylene and has 24-hour protection from a technology that works constantly to reduce microbes by up to 99.99% on the protected surface. Like all pet bowls, the HERO Bowl should be cleaned regularly, but unlike on an unprotected bowl, the risk of microbial cross contamination from the HERO Bowl is actively reduced as the BioCote® technology continues to perform against the colonisation of bacteria, perfectly complementing existing hygiene practices. The BioCote® additive has been proven to reduce up to 86% of bacteria in just 15 minutes, 99.5% in two hours and has even been proven to inactivate the H1N1 virus. The technology is resistant to microbes, such as bacteria, mould and fungi, and also prevents the formation of biofilms – a defence mechanism from certain bacteria that is a secretion of mucus which builds up until visible to the naked eye. BioCote® technology is proven to last for 25 years!

ARE YOU A DOG OWNER? A GROOMER? A DOG FRIENDLY CAFÉ? A VET SURGERY? A BOARDING KENNEL?

With modern day dog owners taking more interest in the health and hygiene of their pets than ever before, the HERO bowl – which by the way is non-slip and dishwasher safe – is also ideal for multiple pet households as well as vet surgeries, grooming salons, rescue centres, kennels and dog friendly cafes where bowls are often shared and hygiene is of the utmost importance.

The innovative HERO Bowl is available to order from today until July 28 only from Indiegogo with fantastic early bird discounts.

Immediate, Complete, & Safe Tick Removal: It May Save Your Petโ€™s Life!

Ticks are one of the most common blood-feeding parasites in the world. Did you know that tick populations, as well as tick-borne diseases, are increasing at alarming rates? According to the Centers for Disease Control diseases spread by ticks have more than tripled since 2004. In fact, Lyme disease can now be found on every continent except Antarctica! Ticks are thriving in areas previously too cold for them to live, weather patterns are creating longer summer seasons, and, deer populations (a primary blood host for ticks) are growing rapidly.

Although tick-borne diseases can be life threatening, the feeding process, itself, may also prove to be dangerous to our beloved pets…including severe toxemias, blood loss due to large consumption of the host’s blood, and, possible death. In most cases, you have approximately twenty-four to thirty-six hours to remove a tick from your pet before disease transmission takes place. It is for these reasons that tick removal from dogs, cats, or other pets must take place immediately – completely and safely – without putting pet owners at risk.

There is only one tool on the market that will help you do just that! The patented, self-energizing TickZapper® is the only tick removal tool on the market, today, that fully captures and contains the tick, while also removing it entirely (including mouthparts!) – without the risk of human contact. Read below to learn more about how to keep your fury friend safe with chemical-free tick removal! See TickZapper® in Action!

How to Conduct a Proper Tick Check

Proper tick checks are necessary in order to stave off the many dangers of ticks and tick-borne diseases. A thorough tick check should be conducted on your pet’s body immediately after his or her outdoor activities have concluded for the day…regardless of the season! By the time a tick has engorged itself on a host animal, it can look suspiciously like a wart or skin tag. Six common areas to check for ticks include the inside of ears, between toes, under the tail, in the genital regions, around eyelids, and under the collar. Using your fingertips, slowly and carefully feel for small bumps on your animal’s skin surface, beneath the fur. If you've found a white, gray, or light-brownish mass on the animal’s skin, check at the base of the mass. If the mass is indeed a tick, you'll find the mouthparts burrowed in the animal’s skin, as well as four pairs of walking legs, nearby. Learn more Here.

Fun Fact: Did you know that ticks do not have heads?

Ticks have three body regions: the capitulum (basis capituli – which attaches the capitulum to the body, the mouthparts, and the palps), body region, and legs. The capitulum is often mistaken for a head. In reality, there is no head, nor brain! Ticks rely on their Haller’s organ to source blood hosts. This organ operates much like an antennae. Located in the two front legs, it is an important sensory organ that enables ticks to detect factors emitted by potential blood hosts, such as odors, heat, vibration, as well as other external factors. In addition, ticks have two mouthparts (chelicerae – for cutting into the skin, and the hypostome – which bears teeth). These parts enable the tick to pierce the host’s skin, followed by the release of a cement-like substance, then the blood-feeding commences. See photo, below.

Female Tick Preparing to Feed: Half of her mouthparts have pieced the silicone membrane

TickZapper® provides an effective way for pet owners to remove the entire tick (including mouthparts) – while also eliminating the risk of touching the tick. This quick and easy tick removal method can save time while also reducing stress for both pet and pet owner. No more tugging on your pet’s sensitive skin!

Top 5 Benefits of a Vegan Dog Diet

Plant-based diets offer a wide range of health benefits, which makes them a great fit for dogs of all shapes, sizes, and ages. If your pup suffers from chronic symptoms like itchy skin, digestive issues, joint pain, or eye discharge, it might be time to try a nutritionally-complete vegan diet. Below are 5 incredible health benefits that you can expect when switching your pooch to plant-based.

Allergen-friendly

According to experts at Cummings Veterinary Medical Center at Tufts University, "The most commonly reported food allergies in dogs are chicken, beef, dairy, and egg…What surprises many pet owners is that grains are actually uncommon causes of food allergies – most pets are allergic to animal proteins." Food allergies can cause a variety of symptoms in dogs, including rashes, dry and itchy skin, loose stool, constipation, gas, vomiting, eye discharge, yeast infections, and fur loss. Exposure to allergens over time is a health concern, as it compromises the immune system. Plant-based diets are naturally allergen-friendly, meaning that your pup can finally get some relief from those chronic, uncomfortable symptoms.

Easily digestible

Vegan formulas commonly help dogs with a whole range of digestive issues, from loose stool to constipation to gas. Conversely, meat-based dog foods are often hard on the digestive system due to the acidifying and inflammatory effects of animal protein. Because plant-based ingredients are gentle on digestion and often free of irritating allergens, they can help clear up symptoms in even the most sensitive of pups.

Anti-inflammatory

Compared to animal-based foods, plant-based foods are naturally anti-inflammatory, which means they can help relieve joint pain and arthritis (making them an excellent fit for senior dogs). Dogs who switch to a vegan diet often experience improved mobility, which means stronger muscles, longer walks, and more endurance at the dog park.

Weight management

Made with lean and easily digestible ingredients, vegan dog food formulas are a great choice for dogs who have trouble maintaining a proper weight. Overweight dogs often shed excess pounds after making the switch, helping them stay lean and live longer, more active lives.

Improves energy levels

Switching your dog to a vegan diet can help them regain puppy-like energy due to the clean, readily-available nutrition (without the negative effects from meat-based and byproduct-heavy food). Plant-based pups often find boundless energy on their new diets, which contributes to a higher quality of life.

Is your pup ready to make the switch to a cleaner, healthier diet? At v-dog, we've seen thousands of dogs reap the health benefits of our 100% plant based products, receiving A+ checkups at the vet. Our kibble is nutritionally complete and balanced, meets AAFCO guidelines, and free of byproducts, fillers, and common allergens. Learn more about what we do at v-dog.com.

How to Exercise a High-Energy Dog (without jogging or long trips to the dog park)

Do you have a high energy dog that seems to go, go, go, and never run out of energy?

Do you try to give him a walk a few times a week but he’s pretty much screaming at you the whole time: “More! More! More!” while straining forward on the leash?

You could always jog with him but you’ve probably ruled that out because, well… jogging.

BUT you know he craves and needs it.

Well before you resign yourself to being a bad pet owner who hinders his dog’s health and well-being, we’ve got a solution:

It’s called LeashBuddy and it’s a dog leash that attaches to your bike.

We know what you’re thinking – heck, we were skeptical too, but this thing actually works!

First off, you’re probably wondering: IS THIS EVEN SAFE?

Rest assured, after months of testing it absolutely is and dogs love it!

In fact, a leisurely bike ride is about 8 mph which is the perfect speed to have him easily trot alongside your bike.

At this speed many dogs are even pulling forward wanting to go faster!

Obviously, every dog has a different pace but that’s the beauty of this – you can easily go slower or faster and they’ll get the perfect amount of exercise.

The next obvious question is: What happens if my dog bolts after a squirrel?

Safety is paramount with any biking activity but especially one that involves your dog. Thankfully the inventors clearly thought about this too.

The LeashBuddy has an integrated spring that acts like a big doggie shock absorber.

If your dog suddenly darts, the pole deflects just enough so the sudden movement doesn’t get transferred back to the bike.

It also has a flex-leash to handle smaller tugs and pulls and keeps the dog going the same direction as the bike.

Because it’s built of stainless steel, it will never rust and is strong enough to handle the largest dogs.

Also, the pole can quickly be mounted to either side of your bike making it easy to switch the side he’s on.

LeashBuddy is designed for dogs 10 lbs and up so Springer Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, Huskies, Labs, Boxers and more are all perfect candidates for the LeashBuddy.

If you’ve got a dog with a seemingly endless amount of energy, LeashBuddy could be the perfect thing to keep him happy and give you peace of mind knowing he’s well exercised. (Did we mention no jogging was involved?)

Check out the LeashBuddy HERE!

7 Warning Signs That Your Dog is in Pain

As a dog owner, the safety and wellbeing of your pet is a top priority. But of course, dogs and humans don't share the same language – so it can be difficult to tell when your dog is in pain.

Some of the signs a dog is in pain are easy to spot, such as limping or a visible wound. But other signs of pain may be more difficult to identify.

In this post, we'll take a look at 7 of the most common warning signs a dog is in pain. Keep an eye out for these to make sure your buddy doesn't suffer in silence.

1) Constant Grooming

It's normal for dogs to groom themselves, but if the behavior becomes compulsive and excessive it could be a sign of pain. Pay particular attention if your dog starts to obsessively lick a localized area of his body. Dogs will often lick where it hurts, even if the pain is internal.

If your dog starts grooming excessively – especially if he's paying close attention to one area of his body – it's a good idea to take him to the veterinarian for a checkup.

2) Being More Vocal

One of the signs a dog is in pain is increased vocalization. Is your dog making more noise than usual? If so, he could be trying to tell you that he’s in pain.

Look out for a sudden increase in whining, growling, barking, or other kinds of vocalization. And if your dog is being more vocal than normal, check him over to see if you can identify any areas of his body that may be in pain.

Always be sure to inspect your dog's body for painful areas as gently as possible to avoid causing further harm.

3) Loss of Appetite

Most dogs love to eat, so a disinterest in food can be a warning sign of pain. If your dog is in pain he may have difficulty eating or moving to where his food bowl is.

Loss of appetite can also be a symptom of serious illness such as liver and kidney conditions, dental disease, and even cancer – so it's best not to take any chances. If your dog is refusing to eat, take him to the veterinarian as soon as possible.

4) Aggression

Sudden changes in a dog's behavior can indicate pain – and aggression is no exception. If your dog is usually docile and friendly, but suddenly becomes aggressive, there's a good chance that he's in pain.

If your dog is showing signs of aggression take extra care when examining him for injuries. Some dogs may snap at their owners when they're feeling threatened and in pain.

5) Panting

Panting is a normal canine behavior that's often a sign of exertion. You've probably noticed that your dog will pant heavily after intense exercises such as running after a ball or toy. If your dog is panting heavily even though he's not been exercising, it's most likely a sign of stress. And the underlying cause of his stress could be pain.

Although it may be difficult to pinpoint the exact reason for heavy panting, if it occurs suddenly and unexpectedly it should be a cause for concern. So, if your dog is panting heavily we recommend a visit to your veterinarian.

6) Difficulty Moving

Difficulty moving can be a sign of conditions such as arthritis or hip pain. An injury may also be the underlying cause. Keep an eye out for signs that your dog has problems with his mobility such as a reluctance to climb stairs, jump in and out of the car, or run around outside.

A lack of fluidity in your dog's movements is another warning sign of pain. Dogs in pain will tend to move around quite slowly and can often appear stiff and lethargic. They may walk with a limp, or have trouble laying down and getting back up again.

7) Other Behavioral Changes

Earlier in this post, we talked about sudden behavioral changes that often indicate pain, such as excessive grooming, aggression, and a loss of appetite. Now, let's take a look at other some other behavioral changes that could be indicators that your dog is in pain.

Changes in Sleeping Patterns

Any change in regular sleeping patterns could be a sign that your dog is in pain. Dogs will sometimes sleep more in an attempt to rest and heal the painful area. But some dogs may sleep less due to the intensity of the pain.

Unexpected Accidents in the House

Dogs in pain often have difficulty moving around, laying down, and getting up out of their bed. This can result in accidents in the house. If your dog is well house-trained but suddenly starts to urinate and defecate in the house, make sure not to rule out pain as the underlying cause.

How to Help a Dog in Pain

So, now you know some of the warning signs a dog is in pain, what can you do to help your dog if he’s suffering?

There are a lot of supplements out there that can be a more natural alternative to pain pills, such as coconut oil for dogs, fish oil and even some cannabinoids for dogs that can make a big difference.

One of the first things to do if your dog is in pain is limit his exercise and give him enough time to heal. Place your dog's bed in a quiet, low-traffic area of the house so that he can rest and recuperate. It's especially important to provide a comfortable dog bed that's the correct size and supports his whole body.

BuddyRest orthopedic memory foam dog beds are the perfect choice for dogs suffering from pain. We've consulted with multiple veterinarians to make sure we recommend the best beds and these offer superior comfort, support, and pain relief by redistributing weight evenly across the entire surface of the bed.

Finally, as we've mentioned throughout this post, it's important to visit your veterinarian if you suspect that your dog is in pain. It is often difficult to identify the source of your dog's pain at home, so it's always best to consult a veterinarian who can diagnose the pain and advise you on the correct course of treatment.

4 Dog Ailments You Can Manage With CBD Oil Products

There is a new, natural product hitting the shelves of pet stores and websites that have the ability to help manage multiple ailments dogs commonly suffer from. And you might find it surprising that this product is derived from marijuana! Not to worry, these are not the kinds of psychoactive cannabis products your parents warned you about in middle school. Rather, our four-legged friends can benefit from CBD, a non-psychoactive compound found in the stalks and stems of hemp plants.  The same hemp oil that has become popular among humans for its health benefits, is also now a highly effective natural treatment for illnesses in your dogs. Let's look at four specific dog illnesses that could become better managed with CBD oil.

1. Pain and Arthritis

It's difficult to watch your dog get older and suffer from arthritis and pain. Fortunately, CBD is known to alleviate stiffness and pain associated with arthritis in dogs. One standout story Thoman McDermott who didn't know how to deal with Teddy, his 12-year-old yellow Lab's affliction with arthritis who could barely move due to arthritis and hip pain. Almost immediately after giving Teddy CBD oil, he noticed him moving around more freely without pain. The dog's appetite also returned, which was an added bonus.

2. Seizures

There are many reasons why dogs can suddenly experience seizures including head injuries, anemia, cancer or a stroke. Regardless of the cause, it is never easy to watch your dog experience a seizure and more so, feeling helpless to getting a seizure to stop.
Studies have shown that a small amount of CBD oil has the ability to stop a seizure as well as reduce the frequency of future seizures. Rather than rely on drugs that bring horrible side effects, CBD is an all-natural product. Now you can avoid causing potential damage to your dog's vital organs from drugs like potassium bromide or phenobarbital.

While it's important to pay attention to proper CBD dosing, science shows an 84% decrease in seizures for all breeds. It still pays to work with a veterinarian that understands proper administering to avoid potential overdosing.

3. Anxiety

Does your dog suffer from separation anxiety or noise phobia? Unfortunately, anxiety in dogs isn’t just annoying and distracting but can also lead to aggression. Thankfully, similarly to humans, one of the most common reasons dogs can benefit from CBD oil is for anxiety purposes.  When CBD is ingested, it enters a dog’s endocannabinoid system and specific receptors are activated. One of the benefits of the endocannabinoid system is its ability to send communication between other systems in the body. When a dog is given CBD, receptors “speak” to one another allowing your pet feel calm.

4. Allergies

Has your dog recently been obsessively licking his paws, shaking his head, or scratching his coat? If so, there is a good chance he is reacting to allergies. Regardless of the cause of irritation (environmental factors, food allergies, hormone imbalances, etc.) the symptoms of skin inflammation are all the same. Some common side effects of prescription allergy medicine include sedation, constipation, and inappetite arguably leaving your pet worse off than before. Luckily Cannabidiol, which has natural anti-inflammatory properties, reduces allergic reactions as well as calm obsessive behaviors like paw licking.

It is always recommended to consult your veterinarian prior to administering CBD to your pet.

The CBDistillery™ was founded by a group of Colorado natives with a strong belief that people have a right to the highest quality, fairly priced hemp derived CBD. We aim to provide more than just exceptional products and service, we are on a mission to provide hemp derived CBD to all through the #CBDMOVEMENT, by providing access to education, research, and testimonials.
