New York City shelter dogs are more comfortable thanks to Rational Animal, the fundraising project of Susan Brandt. Rational Animal's aim is to raise public awareness about New York City's most at-risk animals. Using media campaigns and special events, they increase awareness and raise vital money for rescues and shelters, allowing them to continue caring for animals.

Their current focus is a project called "Mother's Comfort.” After discovering the speed at which shelters use linens and bedding, they made it their mission to help provide beds for animals that need them. In noisy and stressful environments, warm and clean bedding can comfort animals, helping them sleep better, and avoid illness associated with shelters. And a less stressed animals has an easier time appealing to would-be adopters and thus a better chance of finding a forever home.

Since starting in 2009, they have sewn over 7,000 beds and the goal of the current campaign is to provide as even more. With supporters such as Alison Mosshart of The Kills (who is featured alongside dog Archie in the above campaign poster photographed by bandmate and Kate Moss's husband Jamie Hince), the project is picking up steam.
