Telluride, A Pet-friendly Mountain Town

As a pet-friendly town, Telluride presents visitors and their dogs a wide array of accommodations and activities for an enjoyable, hassle-free vacation, and in fact, Telluride was just awarded the National Geographic’s The Dog Lover’s Guide to Travel “Paw of Approval.” Some locals claim that Tellurideboasts more dogs than people per capita, and as you may have heard, the town recently welcomed Olympic medalist and Telluride native, Gus Kenworthy and his newly adopted puppies from Sochi; Mama, Jake and Rosa.

Pet-friendly Accommodations
When booking accommodations, visitors have various luxurious, pet-friendly hotel properties to choose from with an additional charge applied to their room. If visitors are going somewhere they can't take their dogs, hotels like lumiere Hotel and Hotel Madeline will arrange for a dog walker and dog sitter to ensure they are taken care of while guests are out and about. Hotel Telluride even has a blog named "Furry Fans of theHotel Telluride," which features the latest puppy adventures in the hotel and invites dog guests to stop by the front desk for treats. Additional pet-friendly lodges are provided on the Visit Telluride website for visitors to review and book accommodations.

Although dogs are required to be leashed in Telluride and Mountain Village at all times, there are convenient two-hour puppy parking spots located in front of the town’s restaurants and shops. Owners also have easy access to pick-up bags and trash containers when walking dogs throughout the town and on most trails.

Pet-friendly Transportation
In order to effortlessly get around town, people are encouraged to take their dogs on the gondolas that run between Telluride and Mountain Village. The gondolas have designated pet-friendly cabins that are clearly marked on the windows, so owners are reinsured that dogs are welcomed aboard. Well-behaved dogs can also hop on the Galloping Goose, Telluride’s shuttle bus system that runs all through out the town.

Pet-friendly Activities
During the spring and summer, hiking is one of the most popular leisure activities in Telluride. Leashed dogscan join their owners on several trails, all of which have magnificent views of the majestic San Juan Mountains. Trails vary in difficulty, but descriptions of the terrains are provided on the Visit Telluride website. Through the website, owners can choose appropriate hiking trails suited for their dogs like the thrilling 1.8-mile trail up to Bridal Veil Falls, or for an outdoors getaway, the Priest Lake Trails is an ideal location for hiking and camping with canines.
