The Dallas Morning News wrote of James Chefchis, “…he unearths soulful nuances in his (pet) portraits”. Former director of The Fort Worth Art Museum, Ron Lowe, wrote “…what’s important is what James brings to his (pet) paintings; the emotional connection. The paintings are imbued and enriched with the residual memory of the companionship and comfort of ones pets."

What sets James apart from the pack is that he often paints animal portraits on the pages, and sometimes covers, of beautiful worn books. The visual medium a book alludes to the loving memoir of a beloved companion. But whatever the medium chosen, James believes every commission is a collaboration and enjoys the relationship between he and his customers to ensure satisfaction.

James describes his artistic intention as “My paintings are explorations of the visible: line, color, texture, but of also the unseen, such as time, loss, joy, and all mysteries of life”. Although James can and often paints pets in traditional techniques, he adds, “ The encounters with people who love their pets and are open to a nontraditional approach to pet portraits have been the most memorable”.
