A first-of-its-kind system in San Francisco for composting dog waste will demonstrate the potential to keep 32 million pounds of waste from an estimated 120,000 dogs from entering the landfill each year and move the city closer to its goal of zero waste.  The initiative which provides dog owners with compostable bags dispensed where they walk their dogs, a collection bin, and pick up service will be inaugurated at the Starr King Open Space, located in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 25th during a community event from 12 to 5pm. It’s the first dog waste composting program in San Francisco and, likely, the first in California too.

Speakers newly include Keith Dews II, representing the City and County’s SF Environment, who will speak about Zero Waste, as well as Mark Williams, BioBag, who will speak about the potential impact of the new composting initiative and how it works. With the city working toward its Zero Waste goal, testing this initiative which could be expanded throughout the Bay Area, could prove very worthwhile to reduce landfill and methane emissions.

The partnership that will make the initiative possible includes BioBag, the certified compostable bag manufacturer, EarthBaby, a compostable diaper service serving the San Francisco Bay Area that will pick up the dog waste and take it to a special composting facility, and a willing Board of Directors of the Starr King Open Space park.
